Online Lending, Debt Culture, and Islamic Economic Principles https://ejournal.staimta.ac.id/index.php/eksyar/article/view/672
Background: The rapid growth of online lending platforms across Muslim-majority countries has raised critical questions about the ethical and economic implications of fintech financing, particularly for low-income communities. Purpose: This study investigates whether digital financial services—promoted as tools of financial inclusion—are in fact fostering a culture of economic dependency and debt in contradiction to the foundational principles of Islamic economics, which emphasize self-reliance (ikhtiar), justice ('adl), and the prohibition of riba. The research focuses on three comparative contexts: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Egypt—countries with significant Muslim populations and active fintech ecosystems. Study design/methodology/approach: By employing a literature review methodology supported by empirical data from credible news outlets and publicly available reports, this paper explores how online lending practices differ in regulatory structure, religious framing, and socioeconomic impact. Despite differences in national policies and religious fatwas, a common pattern emerges: the proliferation of short-term, high-interest loans among economically vulnerable populations. Findings: The study highlights the urgency of developing fintech models that align with Islamic moral economy, and calls for stronger institutional frameworks and public awareness to counteract the normalization of debt as a coping mechanism. Research limitations/implications – This paper contributes to a growing discourse on the ethical challenges of digital finance in the Muslim world. Originality/value: This paper offers a novel ethical analysis of online lending practices in three Muslim-majority countries by applying Islamic economic principles—justice, balance, and social responsibility—to the growing fintech landscape.
Aang Kunaifi Fikri Zhilalil Haq Copyright (c) 2025 EKSYAR : Ekonomi Syari'ah dan Bisnis Islam (e-Journal) 2025-06-26 2025-06-26 12 1 21 33 10.54956/eksyar.v12i01.672 Evaluation of the Performance of the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) Using Financial Ratios for Optimization https://ejournal.staimta.ac.id/index.php/eksyar/article/view/671
BAZNAS as the coordinator of zakat management institutions spread across Indonesia, has conducted a financial ratio study to measure the performance of a non-profit organization, especially for zakat management organizations (OPZ). The advantage of using this method is that the OPZ performance is known precisely, quickly and can be assessed in all aspects, so that a decision can be made immediately about which aspects will be improved first. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the performance of BAZNAS using special financial ratios for zakat management institutions. This research uses a descriptive method with a quantitative approach, namely by describing the financial performance of BAZNAS over the last five years by first determining the financial ratios for non-profit institutions and then comparing them between years. This type of research data is secondary data, namely the audited financial reports of BAZNAS for 2018-2022. The results of this research state that BAZNAS' financial performance is declared optimal based on the activity ratio and amil fund ratio, while the other 3 ratios (efficiency ratio, liquidity ratio and growth ratio) state that BAZNAS' performance is not good.
Lulud Wijayanti Copyright (c) 2025 EKSYAR : Ekonomi Syari'ah dan Bisnis Islam (e-Journal) 2025-06-30 2025-06-30 12 1 34 49 10.54956/eksyar.v12i01.671 Analisis Sistem Bagi Hasil Pada Kerjasama Pertanian Padi Antara Pemilik Lahan Dan Penggarap Dalam Perspektif Ekonomi Syariah https://ejournal.staimta.ac.id/index.php/eksyar/article/view/681
Agricultural cooperation with a profit-sharing system between landowners and cultivators is a long-standing practice traditionally practiced in rural communities. In the Sempulur II Trenggalek Farmers Group, this system is still carried out orally without referring to the principles of Islamic economics. Based on this, this study formulates two main problems: how the profit-sharing system is implemented in the group and to what extent it is in accordance with the principles of Islamic economics. The purpose of the study was to understand the ongoing profit-sharing practices and to assess them from a sharia perspective. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study method, through interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the system known as ngedok resembles a muzara'ah contract, carried out without a written agreement and based on trust, with a profit sharing of 2/3 for landowners and 1/3 for cultivators. Although it runs smoothly, this system is not fully in accordance with Islamic principles due to the lack of clarity of the contract and supervision. Therefore, through this study, the researcher recommends recording the contract in writing and increasing the role of farmer groups in ensuring justice and supervision of cooperation.
Filda Ashofa Mei Santi Copyright (c) 2025 EKSYAR : Ekonomi Syari'ah dan Bisnis Islam (e-Journal) 2025-06-30 2025-06-30 12 1 50 70 10.54956/eksyar.v12i01.681 Transformasi Prinsip Anti Kredit Abdurrahman bin Auf dalam Perspektif Maṣlaḥah mursalah dan Relevansinya terhadap Pembiayaan UMKM Syariah https://ejournal.staimta.ac.id/index.php/eksyar/article/view/695
This study aims to revisit the cash-only trading principle practiced by Abdurrahman bin Auf. In today’s context, where UMKM rely heavily on flexible financing, his rejection of credit sales seems less compatible. Therefore, this research seeks to reinterpret his principle using the concept of maṣlaḥah mursalah to explore its adaptability in Sharia-compliant financing for modern UMKM. This study adopts a qualitative library-based approach by examining various relevant literature sources. The research finds that Abdurrahman’s cash-only policy remains ethically sound, upholding contract clarity, fairness, and avoidance of riba. However, through the framework of maṣlaḥah mursalah, Sharia-compliant credit mechanisms such as deferred-payment murabahah and musyarakah are permissible when free from usury, clearly defined, and based on mutual consent. These tools allow for flexible UMKM financing while preserving Islamic ethical standards. This study is normative and conceptual in nature, lacking empirical field data. Further research is needed to assess the practical application of these financing models among UMKM actors in real-world settings. The study contributes to the discourse on Islamic business ethics and adaptive legal reasoning. It provides a theoretical framework for integrating traditional Islamic principles with modern economic needs, supporting inclusive and ethical Sharia-based financing models for UMKM in contemporary contexts.
Aisyah Rachmat Ghafur Hamran Muhammad Wahyuddin Abdullah Copyright (c) 2025 EKSYAR : Ekonomi Syari'ah dan Bisnis Islam (e-Journal) 2025-06-20 2025-06-20 12 1 71 82 10.54956/eksyar.v12i01.695 Zakat sebagai Solusi Ekonomi Islam untuk Pengentasan Kemiskinan: Analisis Lapangan di BAZNAS Kabupaten Tulungagung https://ejournal.staimta.ac.id/index.php/eksyar/article/view/683
Zakat is one of the most essential instruments in the Islamic economic system, functioning not only as an act of worship but also as a social responsibility to assist the poor. Data were collected through interviews with BAZNAS Tulungagung, documentation of zakat collection and distribution infographics from 2020 to 2024, and the 2024 Zakat Impact Survey (Kajian Dampak Zakat/KDZ). The findings reveal that productive zakat programs, including the Living Expenses Program, business capital assistance, livestock farming, creative industry programs, and educational scholarships, have positively contributed to improving the welfare of mustahik. Based on the KDZ survey, 43 out of 85 mustahik (50.59%) moved into the extreme poverty alleviation category. The background of this study is based on the high poverty rate and limited access to financing for MSME players, which are the main obstacles to business development. BMT, as a sharia-based microfinance institution, provides flexible financing solutions based on sharia principles that align with the needs of the lower-income population. This aligns with Islamic economics, particularly the principles of maqashid syariah, which aim to protect religion, life, intellect, lineage, and wealth. This study employs a qualitative approach using the case study method. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation of BMT Harapan Umat managers and members. Data was analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the murabahah financing mechanism at BMT Harapan Umat is in line with the principles of Islamic economics, such as price transparency, clarity of contracts, and the absence of usury. Additionally, murabahah financing has a positive impact on the well-being of members, including increased income, business development, and improved family economic conditions. The study centered on students from SMAN 12 Maros as the representatives of the digitally active younger generation. The study was conducted from March to April 2025. Using a descriptive quantitative design, the study surveyed 80 students selected from a population of 420 using consecutive sampling, a non-probability sampling method, based on criteria such as age, social media activity, and e-commerce usage. Data were gathered via Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed through multiple linear regression using SPSS 23. The results reveal that influencers significantly shape students’ consumer behavior, especially in the content exposure frequency, consumers’ trust in promotions, and its effect on their purchasing decisions. Likewise, e-commerce strongly influences behavior due to ease of access, varying products offered, and attractive deals. Simultaneously, both influencers and e-commerce positively drive students’ tendency to consume. However, within the Maqashid Shariah framework, this consumer behavior should be regulated to align with Islamic principles, which are the preservation of religion, soul, intellect, wealth, and progeny. The study concludes by highlighting the need to instill Islamic values-based consumption ethics among Gen Z to foster them to become spiritually and socially mindful and responsible consumers.
Muh. For culinary MSMEs, halal certification is not merely a regulatory requirement but also a strategy for enhancing consumer trust and business competitiveness. However, in practice, the implementation of halal certification among MSMEs still faces various challenges. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by culinary MSMEs in the halal certification process and analyze possible efforts to increase awareness and compliance with halal regulations. This study used a library research method by reviewing various scientific literature, journals, previous research results, and official regulations to identify obstacles faced by culinary businesses in managing halal certification. The results indicate that the main obstacles include low legal awareness, limited procedural knowledge, perceived high costs, and minimal outreach and assistance from relevant institutions. Therefore, an active role is needed for the government, BPJPH (Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency), and certification bodies to strengthen education, simplify bureaucracy, and facilitate access to information for MSMEs. This study aims to examine the implementation of Islamic business ethics principles in addressing the reality of high drug prices in pharmacies. The method used was library research, analyzing relevant classical and contemporary literature. The results of the study indicate that Islamic business ethics principles such as ṣidq (honesty), ‘adl (justice), and amanah (responsibility) can serve as guidelines for setting prices that are fair, transparent, and in favor of consumer welfare. Although some pharmacies have implemented these principles, inappropriate practices such as not listing the Highest Retail Price (HET) or taking excessive profit margins are still found. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model with source and method triangulation. Findings reveal three key innovations: technical innovations (shifting from consumptive distribution to business capital and production facilities), institutional innovations (collaboration between zakat managers and local community groups), and distribution innovations (program customization based on village potentials). Active community participation fostered ownership and sustainability, evidenced by beneficiaries transforming into donors and establishing a sharia cooperative network. Implications indicate that the Zakat Village model represents a best practice for sustainable zakat management with high replication potential, supporting maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah objectives.
